Dr. Merran Gowans has been practicing general medicine for over 35 years and holds a particular interest in chronic disease management and patient-focused care. Merran believes a balanced lifestyle is vital to people's general health.
Meet Merran Gowans
Dr. Merran Gowans graduated from University of Melbourne in 1986. As well as completing her General Practice training in 1989, she also completed a certificate of Family Planning with Family Planning Victoria and for 8 years ran immunisation sessions for the Whitehorse City Council.
In 2023 Dr. Merran was proudly awarded a lifetime Membership of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for 35 consecutive years of membership.
Merran has an interest in chronic disease management, as well as the variety of medical conditions seen in all age groups. She has a great rapport with the elderly and enjoys getting to know patients as they go through the various stages of life.
Merran has a particular interest in women’s health and weight management. She has a “patient-centred” focus involving her patients in the decision making required in planning their health care. She also has a holistic approach to medical care and believes a balanced lifestyle, including exercise, stress management and being involved in the community, are vital to people's general health.
In her spare time, Merran is a keen tennis player and participates in weekly competition at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. She also plays at her local South Hawthorn Tennis Club, where she is a volunteer committee member. Merran loves going to yoga classes, and spending time with her two grown-up daughters. She is passionate about environmental conservation and enjoys volunteering for the Friends of Gardiners Creek.
